ADB to design digital transformation project for Sri Lanka
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is currently designing a new digital transformation project for Sri Lanka, with a strong focus on embedding digital security and data privacy within the nation’s accelerating digital economy.
Takafumi Kadono, ADB Country Director for Sri Lanka, announced the upcoming initiative at the “Serendipity Knowledge Program” (SKOP) in Colombo. He emphasized that as the country embraces digitalization, a “security-first and privacy-respecting culture” must be established across the government, private sector, and educational institutions.
Key Focus Areas of ADB Support:
Cybersecurity and Data Protection: The project will prioritize support for cybersecurity and data privacy, which are considered crucial for safeguarding citizens’ rights and enabling innovation.
Strengthening Institutions and Regulation: ADB’s commitment goes beyond financing digital public infrastructure. It is heavily invested in strengthening the necessary legal and regulatory frameworks and institutions.
Inclusive Development: Kadono stressed that a key goal is to ensure that digital transformation is inclusive, closing the “digital divide” so that digital services benefit all citizens and businesses across the island.
The upcoming project is being designed primarily in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and other relevant agencies. Kadono highlighted that the global recognition of the link between technological innovation and sustainable development underscores the need to deliver digital services securely and inclusively.
