Cabinet Approves Major Infrastructure Projects for State Universities

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the implementation of 16 major infrastructure projects across state universities in Sri Lanka. The initiative, proposed by the Prime Minister in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education, aims to upgrade facilities and bring state universities up to international standards.

 

The proposals have been incorporated into the government’s “Investment Plan 2026 – 2030.” These projects are scheduled for implementation during the 2025–2030 period, aligning with the specific requirements of various courses.

 

Notable projects include:

  • Hostel Facilities: Providing new hostel facilities for university students (Estimated cost: Rs. 26.625 billion).

  • Faculty Development: Construction and completion of new buildings and units for the Faculties of Medicine, Business Studies (University of Moratuwa), Dental Health Sciences (University of Sri Jayawardenapura), and Management Studies (Open University), among others.

  • Specialized Labs: Expansion of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (University of Ruhuna) to accommodate a Heavy Structures Engineering Laboratory and a Coastal and Port Engineering Laboratory.
