Sri Lanka to Accelerate Unique Digital Identity Project
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Digital Economy has drawn attention to expediting the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SLUDI) project. The move follows a progress review meeting chaired by President and Minister of Digital Economy, Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The meeting assessed the progress of digital development projects led by the Ministry, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP), and GovTech (Pvt) Ltd. The primary focus was on resolving challenges that cause project delays.
Key directives from the President:
Digital Economy Foundation: The President emphasized the need to establish a solid foundation for government investments in the digital economy, which is a key component of the proposed 2026 Budget.
Private Sector Investment: Measures were discussed to create a more favorable environment for private sector investors and market operators, particularly for the development of digital infrastructure, including island-wide telecom tower construction.
Communication to the Village: The initiative to install 500 new telecom towers within three years must be expedited.
National Identity Cards (NICs): Officials were instructed to immediately resolve delays in issuing National Identity Cards by the DRP.
New Authority: The development of a new Digital Economy Authority and necessary human resources was also discussed.
The acceleration of the SLUDI project is critical for digitalizing the nation’s services and is being championed by the new administration.
