Construction Begins on Country’s Largest Solar Power Project in Hambantota

Sri Lanka has commenced construction on its largest solar power project, a 150 MW ground-mounted solar energy park located in the Gonnoruwa Division of Hambantota District. This major infrastructure initiative spans 450 acres and represents a US $150 million private-sector-led investment aimed at strengthening the country’s renewable energy capacity while addressing regional power needs.

The project is being developed by a joint venture between DH Energy Singapore and Greentech Capital, with developers committing to operate the facility for 20 years before handing it over to the government. It is expected to connect to Sri Lanka’s national grid by 2027, reducing the severity of annual drought-related power cuts in the Southern Province and supporting national renewable energy targets.

Officials also note that the investment will generate about 300 direct jobs, as well as additional indirect employment, while contributing approximately 20 % of the daytime electricity demand in the region once operational. The project includes dedicated transmission infrastructure funded by the investors and is positioned as a strategic contribution to the nation’s energy transition.
