Hayleys Launches Sri Lanka’s First Shade-Tree Carbon Credit Project (T-SHADE)
Hayleys Plantations (through Horana Plantations PLC) has launched the Tea Shade Development and Ecological Restoration Project (T-SHADE), Sri Lanka’s first shade-tree carbon credit initiative.
Registered under the globally recognized Verified Carbon Standard (Verra), T-SHADE aims to measure and monetize the carbon sequestration capabilities of shade trees in tea estates. The pilot phase has already restored 55 hectares with over 7,000 trees, with a 40-year goal of sequestering over 22 million tonnes of CO₂. The project generates new revenue streams through carbon credits, boosts foreign exchange earnings, enhances tea quality, and provides job and training opportunities for local estate communities. This initiative positions Sri Lanka’s tea industry as a leader in regenerative, climate-smart agriculture.
