India-Sri Lanka Power Grid Interconnection Talks Advance
India and Sri Lanka have successfully moved forward with discussions on the proposed High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power grid interconnection project.
In a virtual meeting, delegations from India’s Ministry of Power and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Energy reviewed the implementation modalities for the crucial cross-border link. The technical parameters for the project were previously confirmed in a June 2025 meeting.
Key Importance for Sri Lanka’s Energy Sector:
Capacity: The planned link has a capacity of 1,000 MW.
Energy Security: It is vital for Sri Lanka’s energy security, allowing the nation to import power during shortages.
Foreign Exchange Earnings: It will enable Sri Lanka to export surplus renewable energy (especially wind power), providing a source of foreign exchange.
Regional Integration: The interconnection will enhance grid stability and integrate Sri Lanka into the broader regional power market.
Both countries have committed to continued engagement to finalize the necessary financial, legal and operational frameworks for the project’s implementation.
