Sri Lanka is aggressively moving to align its packaging industry with global sustainability trends, targeting a 20 percent reduction in total waste by 2035 and aiming to meet European Union (EU) packaging standards by 2040.

According to Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala, a Senior Technical Expert from SYLCAN Trust Sri Lanka, waste management is emerging as a critical growth driver for the local packaging sector, which already contributes about 3 percent to the national GDP.

The country is currently implementing the National Plastic Waste Management Action Plan (2021-2030), which aims to cut plastic used for packaging by 30 percent by the end of the decade. The next focus will be on developing a sustainable packaging action plan that leverages local industry expertise to ensure Sri Lankan exports comply with increasingly strict international regulations, such as the EU’s new rule requiring all packaging to be mandatorily recyclable by 2030.

The global packaging industry currently contributes about US$1 billion to the Sri Lankan economy, with projections to grow to US$1.5 billion within the next five to seven years.
