Sri Lanka, Japan Sign Two Major Deals for Security and Dairy Sector
Sri Lanka and Japan formalized two milestone project agreements on September 29 during the official visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, underscoring a strengthened bilateral partnership. The agreements were exchanged in the presence of President Dissanayake and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
The first agreement covers the Official Security Assistance (OSA) Program, a new Japanese grant aid framework. Valued at 500 million yen (approximately 1 billion rupees), this initiative will provide the Sri Lanka Navy with two types of state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The goal is to enhance Sri Lanka’s capabilities for monitoring, surveillance, and disaster relief, contributing to regional stability.
The second agreement focuses on the Enhancement of Productivity in the Dairy Sector. With a grant of 463 million yen (approximately 945 million rupees), the project aims to improve milk productivity and boost the livelihoods of small-scale dairy farmers. Support includes providing specialized equipment—such as PCR equipment, a sperm motility analyzer system, and four-wheel tractors—to livestock facilities across five provinces, driving inclusive economic development.
These projects demonstrate Japan’s unwavering commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development and security goals.
