Rs. 80 Billion Set Aside for Sri Lanka’s Suburban Electric Train Network

Sri Lanka is preparing a major upgrade of its suburban rail network, with an investment of Rs. 80 billion to introduce electric trains. The project is expected to move into construction in 2027.

Railway General Manager Ravindra Padmapriya said infrastructure plans have been finalised. He made the announcement on the News First programme Dawase Vimasuma.

The first phase will focus on the main commuter routes linking Maradana in Colombo with key suburbs, including Ragama, Panadura and Malawatta. Regional extensions are planned beyond these corridors.

The move to electrification is meant to give daily commuters a faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly service than the current network.

What it means for project professionals

Projects of this kind depend on the same things as any large infrastructure programme: funding that stays committed over several years, procurement completed on schedule, coordination between agencies, and delivery that stays on its timeline. Sri Lanka’s large public infrastructure projects have often seen delays, and the original report itself notes that the project needs to avoid them.

With construction due to begin in 2027, the milestones to watch are contract awards, the start of site work and how the first-phase corridors are sequenced.
