When I first stepped into the world of engineering as a fresh graduate, there was a phrase I heard often: “Doing everything makes you a master of nothing.” Back then, I was brimming with ambition. I wanted to learn IT, earn a master’s in food science, dabble in journalism, and somehow juggle all that while working fulltime as a site engineer on construction projects. I spent weekends teaching AutoCAD to make extra money.

මීට දශක කිහිපයකට පෙර අප සමඟ උසස් පෙළ හැදෑරූ මිතුරෝ දෙදෙනෙක් පිළිගත් විශ්වවිද්යාලයක Nautical Engineering යන උපාධියට සුදුසුකම් ලැබුවෝය. ඒ දවස්වල දුටු ලේඛනයක මේ විෂයය හඳුනවා තිබුණේ ‘නෞකා චලන විද්යාව’ ලෙසය. තවත් මිතුරකු තේරුණේ Marine Engineering උපාධිය හැදෑරීමටය. ඔහුගේ විෂයය සිංහල භාෂාවෙන් ලියා තිබුණේ ‘නාවික ඉංජිනේරු විද්යාව’ කියලාය. මට වැටහුණු පරිදි මුල් දෙදෙනා හැදෑරූ විෂයය නැව් මෙහෙයවීමට වඩාත් බර තැබූ එකක් වන අතර, අනෙක් විෂයය නැවක ක්රියාකාරිත්වය, එංජින් හා නඩත්තුව ඇතුළු විෂයයන්ට වඩාත් බර බවය. කෙසේ වුවත් මේ සියලු දෙනා අද ලෝ පුරා පිළිගත් නැව් සමාගම්වල කපිතාන්වරුන් හා ඉංජිනේරුවන් ලෙස සේවය කරති.

ගොඩනැඟිල්ලක් හැදීම ගසක් සිටුවීමට සමාන නම් ගස උස යන තරමට එහි මුල් පොළොව තුළට කිඳාබැසිය යුතුය. නොඑසේ නම් එහි මුල් පද්ධතිය පොල් ගසක මෙන් දස දහස් ගණනක් මුල් කෙඳිති විසිරී පැතිරී මහපොළොව ශක්තිමත්ව බදා වැලඳගත යුතුය.
This story is also related to the project that I mentioned in my previous column. I have had many experiences working in difficult project environments with a large and complex set of stakeholders. Project life is not always easy. We do not always get well-trained, well-mannered, educated, or amicable stakeholders to deal with.
