Local Expertise Crucial for Central Expressway Project
The Sri Lanka Construction Association (SLCA) has emphasized the critical need for local expertise in the resumption of the Kadawatha-Mirigama section of the Central Expressway. According to SLCA President Susantha Liyanarachchi, local engineers’ deep understanding of Sri Lanka’s unique terrain, including its marshlands and rainy weather, is vital for the project’s effective completion.
With 18 kilometers of the expressway to be built on stilts, Liyanarachchi underscored the importance of strict quality assurance and monitoring of the construction standards and technology of the Chinese company awarded the contract. He referenced a past incident in 2021 where concrete supports for the project collapsed, highlighting the potential risks. The project, valued at USD 950 million, has already faced delays, resulting in a USD 5 million compensation payment to the contractor. Despite the challenges, the resumption of work is welcomed, with the expressway’s opening projected for 2028.
