In a major capacity-building effort, India has completed the sixth training program for Sri Lankan civil service officers, with a total of 241 officers trained so far.

This initiative is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the National Centre for Good Governance of India (NCGG) and the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) in December 2024, during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s state visit to India. The MoU aims to train 1,500 officers over five years.

The most recent program, which included 40 officers, focused on “Clean Cities, Better Future: Transforming Urban Sri Lanka with Regional Practices,” directly aligning with President Dissanayake’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative announced in January 2025. The training covered topics like smart city planning, waste management, digital transformation, and urban transportation systems, including practical exposure through field visits.

India’s commitment to this sector was further reinforced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who announced an additional 700 customized training slots annually during his April 2025 visit, bringing the total annual capacity to benefit 1,000 Sri Lankan professionals.
