China is currently reviewing an aid project to supply Sri Lanka with a fleet of electric buses, according to Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong.

Speaking at the 2025 China Aid Training Alumni Reception, Ambassador Qi Zhenhong stated that the project is being studied at Sri Lanka’s request, marking a new phase of cooperation between the two nations. He described China–Sri Lanka relations as being “at a new starting point,” reinforced by recent high-level visits, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to China earlier this year.

The Ambassador highlighted the steady progress of Chinese-supported developments, noting the full resumption of work on the Central Expressway and the near-finalization of the Sinopec project. The announcement of the electric bus project aligns with growing development programs and robust human resource cooperation, which, by 2025, had seen almost 1,000 Sri Lankans participate in over 100 short-term training programs across 17 key areas.
