The Sri Lankan Government has announced four major infrastructure development projects in Kandy aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. The projects will focus on the Getambe Flyover, Mahaiyawa Underpass, William Gopallawa Mawatha, and Louis Peiris Mawatha under the Central Province Development Programme.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K. D. Lal Kantha conducted field inspections of the proposed project sites on 15 July 2026 to review implementation progress.

Among the planned developments, the Getambe Flyover project remains a key priority. Construction resumed in February 2025 after delays caused by political, administrative, and financial constraints. Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow along the Peradeniya–Kandy and Gannoruwa–Kandy corridors, enhancing transport efficiency and supporting the city’s long-term urban development.
