Over the past century or so, a remarkable number of people from our village, near Diyatalawa, found employment in government service. Many of them worked as assistants in the Survey Department. In the village, the department was simply known as the “Survey Office” (Saruvhar Eka), and those employed there were said to be “working at the Survey.”
දියතලාව නගරාසන්නයේ පිහිටි අපේ ගම්මානයේ පසුගිය වසර සියයක පමණ කාලය තුළ සැලකිය යුතු පිරිසක් රජයේ රැකියාවල නිරත වූහ. ඒ අතුරින් වැඩි පිරිසක් කළ රජයේ රස්සාව වූයේ මිනින්දෝරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ අත්උදවුකරුවන් ලෙස සේවය කිරීමයි. අපේ ගම්තුලානේ මිනින්දෝරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව හැඳින්වූයේ ‘සරුවර් එක’ යනුවෙනි. එහි රැකියාව කළ අය ගැන කීවේ ‘සරුවර් එකේ වැඩ කරනවා’ කියාය.
පසුගිය සතියේ මහවැලි නදිය මතින් විහිදෙන පේරාදෙණිය සරසවි බිමේ මනස්කාන්ත අක්බාර් මගී පාලම මත අපි මොහොතක් නැවතුණෙමු. පාලමක් ගැන ලියන්න පටන් ගත් ඒ ගමන, අවසානයේ ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ඉංජිනේරු අධ්යාපනයේ පියා ලෙස සැලකෙන අපූරු මිනිසකු වෙත මා රැගෙන යනු ඇතැයි එදා මම නොසිතුවෙමි.
We were sitting at our usual spot along the Bosphorus last weekend, tulip shaped glasses of tea warming our hands, when a massive oil tanker drifted slowly across the horizon. I pointed to it and told my colleagues: that ship might be carrying oil from Tengiz the vast field on Kazakhstan's Caspian shore where I worked as a planning engineer from 2007. A distant freight train echoed across the water. That too, I said, could be hauling machinery bound for those same oil fields, three thousand kilometres away.
පසුගිය සති කිහිපය පුරා අපේ කතා-බහ විසිර ගියේ කසාක්ස්තානයේ සුවිසල් ස්ටෙප්ස් තණබිම් සහ තෙල් බිම් තුළය. තෙංගිස් තෙල් ක්ෂේත්රයේ සැලසුම් ඉංජිනේරුවකු ලෙස මා ලැබූ අත්දැකීම්, තාක්ෂණ කරුණුවලින් නොනැවතී, ලෝක ගෝලයේ විශාල වපසරියක විහිද ගියේය. අනෙක් අතට තෙංගිස් භූමිය සතු සුවිශේෂ පිහිටීම නිසා එය ලෝක බලශක්ති හා ප්රවාහන කතාබහේදී මර්මස්ථානයක් බව මට තේරුම් ගියේය. කසාක්ස්තානයේ කැස්පියන් වෙරළේ පිහිටි අක්තාවූ හෝ කුරික් තොටුපොළෙන් නැඟී, ලොව විශාලතම විල වන මහා කැස්පියන් මුහුද තරණය කරන්නට, ඉන් පසු එතැන් සිට අසර්බයිජානය හරහා යළිත් මා දැනට ජීවත් වන තුර්කියේ ඉස්තාන්බුල් නගරය වෙත මනසින් ගොඩවදින්නට මම කැමැත්තෙමි.
පසුගිය සති අන්තයේ අපි බොස්ෆරස් සමුද්ර සන්ධිය අසල පිහිටි වෙරළබඩ අවන්හලක සුපුරුදු පරිදි අසුන් ගෙන සිටියෙමු. තුර්කියේ සාම්ප්රදායික ටියුලිප් හැඩයේ කුඩා වීදුරුවකින් දුම් දමන උණුසුම් තේ පොදක් රස විඳිමින්, සැහැල්ලු අල්ලාප සල්ලාපයක නිරත වන අතරතුර, මිතුරෙක් මගෙන් මෙසේ ඇසීය:
AI tools are now entering project work through many small doors. A team member uses them to draft minutes. A project manager uses them to prepare a status report. A consultant uses them to summarise requirements. A supplier uses them to respond to a query. Before long, AI will be part of the project environment, even if no formal decision has been made to adopt it.
පසුගිය ලිපියෙන් මම බටහිර කසකස්තානයේ තෙංගීස් තෙල් නිධියේ පැවති දැඩි ආරක්ෂණ සංස්කෘතිය සහ ඩිජිටල් විනය පිළිබඳ මගේ අත්දැකීම් ඔබ සමඟ බෙදා ගත්තෙමි. අද මා කතා කරන්නට සැරසෙන්නේ, ලෝකයේ දැවැන්තම තෙල් ව්යාපෘතිවලින් එකක් වන තෙංගීස්හි මා දුටු ‘බැක්-ටු-බැක්’ සේවා මුර ක්රමය, පද්ධතිමය කළමනාකරණය සහ එහි පිටුපස තිබූ ඉංජිනේරුමය විස්කම් පිළිබඳවය.
Projects are not managed in a world of certainty. Even the best project plan is built on assumptions: that people will be available, approvals will arrive on time, suppliers will deliver, users will cooperate, budgets will hold, and technology will work as expected. Some of these assumptions will be correct. Some will not. The real work of project management is often about noticing the difference early enough to act.
