The renovation of the Pettah Central Bus Stand, Sri Lanka’s main bus terminal, has officially begun. The project, inaugurated by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 15, is the first major renovation since the bus stand was built in 1964. The overhaul, estimated to cost Rs. 424 million, will be carried out by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
The renovation will include the addition of modern facilities such as new restrooms, information and communication centers, and upgraded security systems. This initiative is part of the government’s ‘Dream Destination’ program, which also includes the renovation of the Maradana Railway Station. The project aims to provide a more comfortable and efficient experience for commuters while preserving the historical and architectural character.
