Sri Lanka receives first commercial-scale Battery Energy Storage System through Colombo Port

Sri Lanka has received its first commercial-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) through the Colombo Port, marking a key milestone in strengthening national grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration. The initiative follows a government tender process launched in July 2025 for 160–640 MW of storage capacity across multiple substations.

Under the project, four companies were awarded contracts covering 16 substations nationwide. One key implementer, Galilee BESS (a subsidiary of WKV Hydro Group), has already commenced installation works at the Galle and Matara transmission substations using technology supplied by Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd.. Both installations are expected to be completed by July and August respectively and will be integrated into the national grid through the National System Operator Ltd.

Each site will store up to 80 MW of electricity during off-peak hours and supply power during peak demand periods, significantly reducing reliance on diesel generation and saving an estimated Rs. 200 million per month in fuel costs. The system is also expected to improve grid reliability, stabilize electricity supply, and support long-term energy price stability.

Beyond operational benefits, the BESS rollout will contribute to reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality by displacing thermal power generation. The project represents a major step in Sri Lanka’s transition toward a modern, resilient, and sustainable energy infrastructure aligned with global energy storage trends.
