Work is scheduled to begin on six priority development projects in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province under the framework Memorandum of Understanding on Indian Multi-Sectoral Grant Assistance. The initiative was agreed during the April 2025 state visit of Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka and aims to support socio-economic development across the region.
The priority projects include the establishment of batik training centres for women’s empowerment, a premature baby unit, specialised healthcare facilities for eye, ENT, and mental health services, contract farmer clusters for seed production, a sustainable Ayurveda village for wellness tourism, and a new ward complex at a central Ayurvedic dispensary. These projects are part of a larger package of 33 initiatives funded through Indian grant assistance valued at approximately SLR 2.37 billion.
Project agreements were officially signed between Santosh Jha and S. Alokabandara during the visit of C. P. Radhakrishnan to Sri Lanka in April 2026. The programme complements several ongoing Indian-supported development projects in the Eastern Province, including housing construction, hospital upgrades, educational assistance, and religious heritage development.
